GREENBRIER JR HIGH ADDITION

Greenbrier, Arkansas

Completed 2018

38,100 square feet

The Greenbrier Jr High Addition was the result of careful analysis of their existing Jr High facility. The existing building consisted of an original building that was built in the 1960s and an addition that was completed in the year 2000. The 1960s building was structurally sound but could not support the current technological needs of the District. It was well maintained but lacked insulation and the infrastructure needed to upgrade the HVAC systems. It was decided to build a new addition and demolish the oldest portions of the building.

The new addition consisted of 14 new classrooms, 2 science labs, family consumer science with working kitchens, a computer lab, a new administration suite, and a new multi-media center. The design of the new facility is healthy, sustainable, and inspiring to young minds. The layout of the building forms a central courtyard which allows for natural light to enter every learning space. As a point of interest, the entire courtyard was painted Greenbrier Blue and the interior classrooms were painted to compliment the blue courtyard. The courtyard also provides a backdrop for the heavily glazed media center. Large, north-facing windows flood the space with light. The original facility lacked a proper front door and a well-organized drop-off location. The new addition also addressed these issues. Ample queuing space is provided, leading to the front door and a new road was built to alleviate traffic by separating the junior high traffic from the middle school that shares the same site.
